{"id":144,"date":"2019-06-24T16:04:13","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T23:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.orangemoose.com\/blog\/?p=144"},"modified":"2019-06-30T12:12:21","modified_gmt":"2019-06-30T19:12:21","slug":"fiftieth-anniversary-of-apollo-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orangemoose.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/24\/fiftieth-anniversary-of-apollo-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Fiftieth Anniversary of Apollo 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content e-content\">Apollo 11 lifted off on July 14th, 1969 so in three weeks we&#8217;ll be celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of that historic mission.\u00a0 I was thirteen years old in July 1969 and several years into a deep childhood fascination with the space program.\u00a0 Not surprisingly I was glued to the television and newspapers for every aspect of the Apollo 11 mission and still remember how I felt watching and following along.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m looking forward to repeating that experience this July and am delighted to have the Internet to help me out.\u00a0 For my own part I&#8217;ve taken a timeline of mission events from NASA, wrapped it in a bit of JavaScript, and created a simple <a href=\"https:\/\/orangemoose.com\/Applications\/Apollo11\/a11_replay.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">web page<\/a> that will help me keep track of the flow of the mission in real time (though fifty years after the fact).<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have a rich collection of mission photos, videos, and artifacts, or the time to find and weave any into my mission timeline, something I knew other folks would be better positioned to accomplish.\u00a0 Ben Feist and team have <a href=\"https:\/\/kottke.org\/19\/06\/the-apollo-11-mission-in-realtime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">done precisely that<\/a> in creating <a href=\"https:\/\/apolloinrealtime.org\/11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apollo 11 in Real Time<\/a> so I&#8217;ll also have that open continuously between liftoff on July 14 and splashdown on July 24.<\/p>\n<p>Last night I watched Todd Douglas Miller&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/filmmakermagazine.com\/107173-moonshot-todd-douglas-miller-on-apollo-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apollo 11<\/a>&#8221; documentary on CNN (which released it) and it brought back vivid memories of July fifty years ago.\u00a0 I expect I&#8217;ll watch it several more times over the course of the next three weeks &#8212; highly recommended.<\/p>\n<p>Happily both July 14th, liftoff day, and July 20th, landing\/EVA day, fall on weekends so I expect I&#8217;ll set aside time both those days to reconnect with the event that was such a powerful and formative part of my youth.
